Briefing

We want everyone to have a safe, enjoyable ride. This depends on having some organisation in the group and a few simple rules. Here is the guide for Bigfoot CC Ride Leaders.

Pre-Ride Briefing
  • Introductions – Does everyone know everyone’s name? Sociable and useful
  • New riders – we are allowed up to 5 non members. OK if they already have their own CTC/BC membership. Suggest they have water/food (shop across the road if necessary)
  • Bike Check – are they roadworthy? Fix problems before starting
  • Outline route - distance, hills, known hazards. Are your riders in the correct group?
  • Headcount – Check and if possible appoint a back marker
  • Phone – Does everyone have your number in case of getting lost/emergency?
  • Ride rules (see next section)

On The Ride
  • Riding Formation – in traffic, in the countryside
  • Keep group together – Don’t ride off the front, especially if you are leader
  • Regrouping (eg at junctions; after hills)
  • Hand signals
  • Stopping safely

Post-Ride
  • Headcount – Is everyone accounted for?
  • Accident – Report any incident
  • Next ride – tell group about future rides/events

arrow The CTC Ride Leader Guide pdf provides a more detailed guide.

arrow The CTC also offer tips on group riding.

We have a selection of routes mapped out on the Favourite Rides page such as the Crowhurst Route which you can choose from to find a route suited to the ability of your group.

Occasionally there are tumbles and accidents, mostly minor. But there may be damage or injury and these cases should be reported to the Club Secretary using the Incident Report Form.

If you encounter a careless or dangerous driver within Greater London, this should be reported directly to http://www.met.police.uk/roadsafelondon. This is the place to report road rage. If you encounter a dangerously driven bus, report this to tfl.

If you require further information or are interested in becoming a ride leader for BigfootCC please email info@bigfootcc.co.uk. We are always looking for volunteers.
